open source cell phoes

Look at your phone, is there something you want it to have?

If the answer is yes, then you might want to have a look at open source cell phones. With these little critters you can have everything from a touch screen to a media player and 3G to custom apps. Best of all, you can have two different connections like GSM for voice and 3G for data.

One of the biggest problems of open source cell phones is the cost. That is because they are actually tiny computers. These are also very time consuming to make by yourself. However you can buy a kit which will help you save time and includes the radio. Although the only kit I know of is $350-$400, it’s still cheaper than a home made phone. Finally, with a $300 activation fee, the total cost is around $700.

Thank you for tuning in to Geek Notion. If you have a suggestion for a new post idea please leave it in the comments field.

Forget open source phones. Check out the iPhone, the phone that every open source project aspires to be.
